Battle in creeks:
2 more Filipinos freed
The Joint Military Task Force (JTF) said it has rescued
two more Philippine sailors abducted on May 14 on board
a vessel.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the
taskforce has so far rescued 11 Philippine sailors and
four Nigerians abducted the same day on board a
chartered vessel by the NNPC to supply crude oil to
Warri refinery.
A spokesman for the taskforce, Col. Rabe Abubakar, said
in an on-line statement to the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) in Port Harcourt yesterday that the two Philippine
sailors were rescued at Chanomi creek area of Delta on
May 20.
It quoted Abubakar as saying that they were freed during
a search and rescue mission carried out by the taskforce
in the area.

Lambu tragedy: ACF condoles with KNSG
From MUSTAPHA SAYE,Kaduna
Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed shock over
the death of 21 family members of a Kano-based
businessman, Alhaji Garba Shanono as a result of a fatal
motor accident which occurred last Monday night along
Kano-Gwarzo road.
“Everybody knows the devastating effect when a family
loses a member, let alone in multiple of five.
“There is nothing anybody can do in such a grieving
situation beyond supplication to Allah to grant the
family of Alhaji Shanono, his friends, people and
government of Kano state the fortitude to endure what
cannot be changed”, said ACF.
A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the
forum, Anthony N Z Sani added that the accident was a
forceful reminder to appropriate government agencies on
the need to fill potholes on Nigerian roads.

2010 World Cup
qualification: Yar’adua spurs Eagles, Nigerians

President Umaru Musa Yar’adua yesterday made public that
Nigeria will do everything possible to ensure that her
darling team, Super Eagles, qualify for the forthcoming
World Cup soccer competition slated for South Africa,
insisting that ”the 2010 World Cup is one event that
Nigeria cannot afford to fail to qualify for”.
According to the President who was speaking at the
inaugural ceremony of the Presidential Committee on 2010
World Cup, at Presidential Villa, Abuja,“it will be a
major tragedy if the green-white-green does not fly
alongside the national colours of the other 31 countries
in South Africa.

Fifa pick 6 centres, but...

Football's world governing body Fifa says Nigeria faces
losing the right to host the Under-17 World Cup, just as
they announced the six centres expected to host the
championship.
FIFA Vice-President, Mr. Jack Warner while announcing
the six centres namely; Kano, Abuja, Lagos, Enugu,
Calabar and Ijebu Ode, charged them to complete the
remaining works at their various stadia within one
month.
‘’The organisers have been given another month to
prepare for the event - which is scheduled to take place
in October/November this year,’’ Mr. Warner said.
